Guru/Edinburgh/Greyfriars Kirkyard

Greyfriars Kirkyard

The graveyard of Greyfriars Bobby, the Covenanters and, allegedly, some Harry Potter names.

A five-minute wander among the seventeenth-century tombs, with the statue of the loyal terrier at the gate and the Covenanters' Prison at the back. It is free, right beside the National Museum, and the ghost tours use it after dark. Rain suits it, in a way.

When it works

Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon, evening.

Good for going solo, kids and a first visit.
