Royal Albert Dock
The restored Victorian dock with museums, galleries and bars around the water, free to wander.
The five-storey warehouses around the dock hold most of what a first-time visitor wants: the Beatles Story, the Maritime galleries, restaurants and bars, with the Three Graces at the Pier Head next door. It is a good loop in any weather because there is always a door nearby, and the colonnades give shelter in a shower. Come at dusk for the lights on the water.
When it works
Mostly under cover, so light rain is fine. Best morning, afternoon, evening.
Good for a first visit, kids, a date and step-free visits.
