Manchester Cathedral
A medieval church with the widest nave in England and carved misericords worth finding.
Smaller and friendlier than most cathedrals, with fifteenth-century choir stalls and a strong programme of concerts and gigs in the nave. It is free to enter, takes twenty minutes and sits beside the football museum and Chetham's, so it fits a wet-morning loop of the old town.
When it works
Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for going solo, a first visit and step-free visits.
