Guru/Bath/Herschel Museum of Astronomy

Herschel Museum of Astronomy

The house where William Herschel discovered Uranus from the back garden in 1781.

A modest Georgian terrace house where the musician-turned-astronomer built his telescopes and, with his sister Caroline, found a new planet from the garden. The rooms are furnished as they were, with his workshop in the basement. Small, cheap and indoors; an hour for anyone with an interest in the sky.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for going solo and kids.
