Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Fifteen acres of Victorian gardens and four glasshouses in Edgbaston.
The glasshouses take you from tropical to desert in a few steps, and the gardens outside have a bandstand, a lawn aviary and a play area. It is ticketed and a short bus ride from the centre; the glasshouses make it a fair choice for a showery day. Best in spring and early summer.
When it works
Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for kids, a date and step-free visits.
