Cramond and the tidal island
A Roman fort, a harbour village and a causeway to an island you can only reach at low tide.
Cramond is at the mouth of the River Almond, with a pretty village, the foundations of a Roman fort and a mile-long causeway out to Cramond Island. Check the tide times posted at the causeway; people get stranded every year. It is a bus ride north-west of the centre and a fine half-day on a dry day.
When it works
Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for dogs, kids and locals' favourite.
