Edinburgh Castle
The fortress on the rock, with the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the one o’clock gun.
The castle dominates the city from every angle and the view back from the ramparts is the best reason to pay the hefty entry. Inside are the Honours of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the war memorial and St Margaret's Chapel. Much of the site is exposed, so a dry day helps, and tickets sell out in summer; book a morning slot.
When it works
Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for a first visit, kids and groups.
