British Museum

Two million years of human history under one glass roof, free to enter.

The Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and the Egyptian galleries pull the crowds, but the Great Court alone is worth walking through. It is vast, so pick two or three galleries rather than trying to see it all. Entry is free; timed tickets are sometimes needed at busy periods, so check before a weekend visit.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for kids, a first visit, a date, going solo and step-free visits.
