Guru/Manchester/John Rylands Library

John Rylands Library

A neo-Gothic cathedral of a library on Deansgate, free to walk around.

Built in the 1890s as a memorial to a cotton magnate, the reading room looks like a church and holds fragments of the oldest known New Testament text. Entry is free and the historic reading room is the reason to go. It is compact, so it slots easily between other things on a wet afternoon.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for going solo, a date, a first visit and step-free visits.
