The Whitworth
A glass-walled gallery that opens onto its own park, with a strong textile collection.
The Whitworth's 2015 rebuild put a glass gallery straight into the park, so on a bright day the art and the trees blur together. The collection is textiles, watercolours and wallpaper, with changing contemporary shows. It is free, a short bus ride south of the centre, and the park is good for children afterwards.
When it works
Mostly under cover, so light rain is fine. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for kids, a date, going solo and step-free visits.
