The viewpoint on Beechen Cliff that puts the whole city in one frame, ten minutes from the station.
Climb the steps from the south side of the river, or Jacob's Ladder from Wells Road, and the reward is the classic view: the Abbey, the crescents and the hills beyond, with benches to sit on. It is free, quiet and the place to be at sunset. Bring a coat; the cliff catches the wind.
