Royal Crescent and the Circus
The two great Georgian set pieces, five minutes apart, with a museum house at No. 1.
The Circus is three curved terraces around a ring of plane trees; the Royal Crescent is thirty houses in one sweep above a lawn with the whole valley beyond. Both are free to walk, and No. 1 Royal Crescent is furnished as it was in the 1770s for a modest ticket. Go in low sun for the honey-coloured stone at its best.
When it works
Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon, evening. Free; No. 1 Royal Crescent ticketed.
Good for a first visit, a date, sunset and step-free visits.
