Jewellery Quarter
Two hundred working jewellers, a preserved 1980s workshop museum and the best pubs in the city.
The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is a time capsule: the Smith and Pepper factory left exactly as it was when the owners walked out in 1981, shown by guided tour. Around it are the workshops, the Georgian St Paul's Square and a run of good restaurants and bars. Fifteen minutes' walk from the centre.
When it works
Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon, evening. Quarter free; museum ticketed.
Good for a date, going solo and locals' favourite.
