Kirkgate Market
One of the largest covered markets in Europe, where Marks and Spencer started, with a street-food hall.
Eight hundred stalls under Victorian iron and glass, from fishmongers and fabric to the food hall in the 1976 section, where the lunchtime queues form for curry, pies and dumplings. The M&S clock marks the original penny bazaar. Under cover, cheap and at its best on a weekday lunchtime.
When it works
Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for locals' favourite, a first visit and groups.
