Temple Newsam

A Tudor-Jacobean house in a Capability Brown park, with a rare-breeds farm children love.

The house, where Lord Darnley was born, has forty rooms of paintings and furniture and is cheap to enter; the park around it is free and huge, with the home farm, walled gardens and woods. It is on the eastern edge of the city, twenty minutes by bus. A good all-weather half-day with the house as shelter.

When it works

Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon. Park free; house and farm cheap.

Good for kids and dogs.
