Guru/Leeds/Thackray Museum of Medicine

Thackray Museum of Medicine

A recreated Victorian slum, a surgical theatre and a lot of interactive gore, for older children especially.

Housed in a former workhouse beside St James's Hospital, the Thackray walks you through the streets of 1840s Leeds, the story of anaesthetics and a leg amputation without them, and hands-on galleries about the body. It reopened in 2021 after a rebuild and is indoors and ticketed. Best with children of about seven and up.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for kids and step-free visits.
