Western Approaches Museum
The secret wartime bunker where the Battle of the Atlantic was run, kept as it was left.
Beneath a nondescript office block is the command centre from which the convoys across the Atlantic were controlled, with the huge operations map, the teleprinter rooms and the bunk rooms preserved. It is atmospheric, entirely underground and takes about ninety minutes. Ticketed; a strong wet-weather pick for anyone with an interest in the war.
When it works
Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for going solo, groups and kids.
