Guru/York/National Railway Museum

National Railway Museum

Mallard, the Flying Scotsman’s home and a Japanese bullet train in the biggest railway museum in the world, free.

Two great halls of locomotives, from Stephenson's Rocket replica to Mallard, the fastest steam engine ever, a Shinkansen and the royal carriages, with a miniature railway outside and a huge new central hall. It is free, five minutes from the station and a full half-day with children. Busiest in school holidays.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for kids, a first visit and step-free visits.
