Guru/York/York Minster

York Minster

The largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, with medieval glass and a tower over the whole city.

The Minster's Great East Window is the biggest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country, the chapter house is a marvel and the undercroft tells the story from the Roman fort beneath. The central tower climb is 275 steps for the view of the walls and the moors. Ticketed for sightseeing, free for services; evensong is a good way in.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon. Free to attend a service; tower extra.

Good for a first visit, kids, a date and step-free visits.
