Guru/Bristol/St Mary Redcliffe

St Mary Redcliffe

The church Elizabeth I called the fairest in England, with a whalebone and a Gothic porch.

A parish church on the scale of a cathedral, with a spire you can see from most of the city and a north porch of extraordinary carving. Inside are a whale rib brought back by Cabot's crew and a memorial to the poet Chatterton. Free, and a short walk from Temple Meads.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for going solo and a first visit.
