Guru/Glasgow/Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis

Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis

The medieval cathedral and, on the hill behind it, a Victorian city of the dead with the best view in town.

The cathedral is the only medieval one on the Scottish mainland to survive the Reformation intact, with a crypt around the tomb of St Mungo. Cross the Bridge of Sighs behind it and climb the Necropolis, where fifty thousand Victorians are buried under obelisks and temples, for a view over the whole city. Both free; the hill is exposed in wind.

When it works

Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon, evening.

Good for a first visit, a date, going solo and sunset.
