Harewood House

A great Georgian house with Chippendale furniture, a bird garden and Capability Brown grounds.

Harewood is the full stately-home day: the Adam interiors and Chippendale furniture upstairs, the below-stairs kitchens, a bird garden with penguins and flamingos, and miles of parkland down to the lake. It is ticketed and pricey and worth a whole day in decent weather. Buses run from Leeds; the house closes for winter.

When it works

Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon.
