Guru/Leeds/Kirkstall Abbey

Kirkstall Abbey

The ruins of a Cistercian abbey in a riverside park, free, with a museum of Victorian streets over the road.

One of the most complete abbey ruins in the country, roofless but standing to full height beside the River Aire, with lawns and the canal towpath around it. Free to wander, with a small visitor centre, and Abbey House Museum across the road has recreated Victorian streets that children like. Markets and open-air films in summer.

When it works

Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon, evening.

Good for kids, dogs, a first visit and a date.
