Ilkley Moor and the Cow and Calf
The moor from the song, half an hour by train, with rock climbing at the Cow and Calf and tea in Ilkley.
The train from Leeds puts you in Ilkley in about thirty minutes, and from the town it is a steep half-hour up to the Cow and Calf rocks and the open moor beyond, with the whole of Wharfedale spread out below. Ilkley itself has the famous Bettys tea room and a lido for hot days. A fine-weather day out; the moor is exposed.
When it works
Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon. Free; train fare.
Good for dogs, groups and locals' favourite.
