Guru/Liverpool/Metropolitan Cathedral

Metropolitan Cathedral

The 1960s concrete crown at the top of Hope Street, glowing blue inside from the lantern.

Known locally as Paddy's Wigwam, the Catholic cathedral is a circular space under a lantern of coloured glass that floods the interior with blue and gold light on a bright day. The crypt beneath, built for an earlier abandoned cathedral, is a different world of brick vaults. Free, and a fifteen-minute walk from its Anglican rival along Hope Street.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for going solo, a first visit and step-free visits.
