Guru/Liverpool/Philharmonic Hall and the Phil

Philharmonic Hall and the Phil

The city’s orchestra in an Art Deco hall, and across the road the most ornate pub in England.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic plays most weeks in its 1939 hall, and the programme runs from Mahler to film scores and comedy. Across the road, the Philharmonic Dining Rooms is a Victorian gin palace of mosaic, mahogany and marble whose gents' toilets are a listed attraction in themselves. One street, a complete evening.

When it works
