Guru/Liverpool/Speke Hall

Speke Hall

A black-and-white Tudor manor with priest holes, woodland walks and the Mersey at the bottom of the garden.

One of the finest timber-framed houses in the country, with a great hall, secret hiding places for Catholic priests and Victorian interiors added later. The grounds run down to the river beside the airport, which makes for an odd and rather wonderful contrast. National Trust; the house has limited winter opening, so check before a cold-season visit.

When it works

Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for kids and dogs.
