Guru/Liverpool/Walker Art Gallery

Walker Art Gallery

One of the best collections outside London, from Rembrandt to Hockney, free.

The Walker has been called the National Gallery of the North and it earns it: Rubens, Rembrandt, the Pre-Raphaelites, a strong twentieth-century room and the John Moores prize for new painting. It is free, calm and beside the World Museum, so a wet day can be spent on one street. The sculpture gallery is a good place to sit.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon.

Good for a date, going solo and step-free visits.
