Tate Modern

Modern art in a former power station, with a free viewing level over the river.

The Turbine Hall is one of the great free spaces in London, and the permanent collection upstairs is free too. Take the lift to the viewing level in the Blavatnik Building for a skyline view that rivals the paid ones. It sits on the South Bank, so it pairs well with a river walk when the weather allows.

When it works

Indoors, so the weather does not matter. Best morning, afternoon, evening. Free; special exhibitions are ticketed.

Good for a date, going solo, a first visit and step-free visits.
