Tower of London
A thousand-year-old fortress with the Crown Jewels and the Yeoman Warder tours.
Start with the free Yeoman Warder tour, then queue for the Crown Jewels before the mid-morning rush. Much of the site is outdoors between the towers, so it is better on a dry day, though the White Tower and the jewel house give you shelter. Allow half a day; it is pricey but it is the one paid landmark most first-time visitors are glad they did.
