Clifford's Tower
The keep of York Castle on its grassy mound, with a new roof deck looking over the whole city.
The four-leafed stone keep on the motte is what is left of the castle, and its 2022 restoration added internal walkways and a roof deck with a full view of the Minster and the rooftops. English Heritage, ticketed, and a quick climb. The mound is the site of the 1190 massacre of the city's Jews, marked by a memorial.
When it works
Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon.
Good for a first visit and kids.
