Guru/York/Merchant Adventurers' Hall

Merchant Adventurers' Hall

A timber-framed guildhall from 1357, still owned by the guild that built it, with a garden by the Foss.

One of the best-preserved medieval guildhalls in Europe, with a great hall on oak posts, an undercroft that was a hospital for the poor and a chapel, all still used by the Company of Merchant Adventurers. It is cheap to visit and takes forty-five minutes. The garden runs down to the river; the café is a quiet lunch.

When it works
