The Shambles and Shambles Market
The overhanging medieval street of butchers’ shops, now sweets and wizard shops, with the market beside it.
The Shambles is the street everyone comes for: fourteenth-century timber houses leaning across a lane so narrow the upper floors nearly touch, once all butchers, now fudge, wands and tea. Shambles Market next door has food stalls and a street-food court under cover. Go early or in the evening to see the street itself rather than the crowds.
When it works
Partly outdoors: better on a dry day, with shelter if it turns. Best morning, afternoon, evening.
Good for a first visit, kids and a date.
