Loch Lomond from Balloch

Fifty minutes by train to the bonnie banks: boat trips, lochside walks and the start of the Highlands.

Trains from Queen Street reach Balloch at the foot of the loch in under an hour, and from the station it is a short walk to the shore, the boat cruises and the paths through Balloch Castle Country Park. Serious walkers head for Conic Hill at Balmaha by bus. A fine-weather day; the loch in rain is a different, greyer experience.

Outdoors: pick a dry day. Best morning, afternoon. Free; train fare, cruises ticketed.
